SWIPT using Hybrid ARQ over Time Varying Channels

چکیده
In this work, we consider a class of wireless powered devices employing Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) to ensure reliable end-to-end communications over a time-varying channel. By using Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT), the perpetually powered transmitter transmits information bearing RF signal to the receiver. The receiver has no power source, and relies on the energy harvested from the received RF blocks from the transmitter. At each incoming RF signal block, the receiver splits the incoming RF signal between the energy harvester and information decoder so that the message is decoded with the least number of re-transmissions. We cast the problem in a Markovian framework, and we show that the optimal policy minimizing the expected number of retransmissions utilizes the incoming RF signal to either exclusively harvest energy or to accumulate mutual information. By doing so, we reduce the problem which is a two dimensional uncountable state Markov chain (MC) into a two dimensional countable state MC and thus, enable a tractable solution for the optimal policy. For independent and identically distributed channels, we also prove that practically simple-to-implement policies such as harvest-first-store-later type of policies are optimal. However, for the case of time-correlated channels, we demonstrate that the statistical knowledge of the channel state may significantly improve the performance when compared to those of the simple-to-implement policies.

Performance of hybrid ARQ schemes using turbo trellis coded modulation for wireless channels
In this paper, bandwidth ef£cient Type-I and Type-II hybridARQ (HARQ) schemes using turbo trellis coded modulation (TTCM) are proposed. These schemes combine the power ef£ciency of turbo codes with the bandwidth ef£ciency of trellis coded modulation (TCM) to create an effective hybrid FEC/ARQ system. Several packet combining schemes are presented for use in conjunction with iterative turbo deco...
متن کاملA novel adaptive hybrid ARQ scheme for wireless ATM networks
This paper describes the design and performance of a novel adaptive hybrid ARQ scheme using concatenated FEC codes for error control over wireless ATM networks. The wireless links are characterized by higher, time-varying error rates and burstier error patterns in comparison with the fiber-based links for which ATM was designed. The purpose of the hybrid ARQ scheme is to provide a capability to...
متن کاملAnalysis of memory and incremental redundancy ARQ schemes over a nonstationary channel
Recently, a type II ARQ scheme using convolutional coding has been analyzed over a nonstationary channel. It has been shown that the type II ARQ scheme performs very well on this type of channel. In this paper we analyze a generalized type II ARQ scheme using punctured convolutional coding on a two-state Markov model of a nonstationary channel. A simple ARQ scheme with memory is also analyzed. ...

In this paper we present a simplified analytical method for performance evaluation of the type-II hybrid ARQ scheme with code combining in time-varying fading channels. In physical layer, a two-state Markov model is used for the fading channel. Based on this model, performance of the type-II hybrid ARQ protocol is upper and lower bounded by considering a superior scheme and an inferior scheme r...
متن کاملAdaptive QoS control for real-time video communication over wireless channels
Robust transmission of real-time video over wireless channels is a challenging problem. This is because the bit error rate (BER) in wireless channels is very high and the bit errors could have devastating effects on the video presentation quality. This paper addresses this problem by introducing adaptive quality-of-service (QoS) control for real-time video communication over wireless channels. ...
